2022 Emmy Category Analysis: Directing and Drama Writing Categories – Blog

Julia Garner in the series finale of ozark “A difficult path to walk”

The directing and writing categories for drama this year have seven spots each and both honor the same five shows, with an additional series thrown in the writing race. It’s become increasingly rare for shows that aren’t nominated for Best Drama Series to make the cut in either category. Indeed, for the second consecutive year, no one has achieved this feat. The only shows that managed multiple nominations in either of those categories this year were yellow jackets with two written nominations and Succession with 3 directing nominations. Fun facts: Succession continues to match its season number to its number of directing nominations (Season 1: 1 Wink; Season 2: 2 Winks; Season 3: 3 Winks) While Succession won the directing race for season two, he won the Drama Emmy for season 1 and 2 which again made him the frontrunner in every category. But let’s look at what else is in the mix.

Brief descriptions of the nominees below – click on the episode titles for spoiler-filled reviews…

Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series

Nominees:

  • Jason Batman- ozark – Episode: “A hard road to walk(Season 4, Episode 14)
    • Description: Last episode of the series. Marty, Wendy and Ruth find a way out.
  • Ben Stiller- Breakup – Episode: “The We We Are(Season 1, Episode 9)
    • Description: Last episode of the season. Things are getting crazy, and we can’t for season two!
  • Hwang Dong Hyuk- squid game – Episode: “Red light, green light(Season 1, Episode 1)
    • Description: A number of desperate people have the chance to participate in a series of deadly games for the ultimate cash prize.
  • Marc Mylod – Succession – Episode: “All the bells say(Season 3, Episode 9)
    • Description: Last episode of the season. The Roy family’s mutinies and betrayals reach a new level.
  • Cathy Yan- Succession – Episode: “The perturbation(Season 3, Episode 3)
    • Description: Kendall spirals, Shiv does his best to contain the damage, and Logan refuses to acknowledge his vulnerability.
  • Lorene Scafaria – Succession – Episode: “too much birthday(Season 3, Episode 7)
    • Description: Kendall celebrates on her birthday as her family members take care of themselves.
  • Karyn Kusama – yellow jackets – Episode: “Pilot(Season 1, Episode 1)
    • Synopsis: The survivors of a plane crash are reunited twenty-five years later under mysterious circumstances.

Analysis: Let’s start with some statistics. This is Bateman’s third nomination in this category (he’s also set to star), and he picked up a shocking win as director for season two over the pilot. Succession and three episodes from the final season of game of thrones. Succession‘s Mylod is the only other nominee to return in this race. Big names like Martin Scorsese and David Fincher have won this award in the past, so it’s possible that Ben Stiller, who was previously nominated for his directorial work on the limited series Escape to Dannemoracould win for Breakup for what I would strongly say is the best nominated episode in this category.

The Season Finale of Succession

Multi-nominated shows very frequently win this award, and a number of pilots have won as well, with The Handmaid’s Tale being the most recent. I think that, despite the overall quality, yellow jackets is more discreet than the other nominees and will not be able to join this group. squid game, on the other hand, has already scored well as a foreign-language series in many categories. So it’s this pilot against the finals of Succession and Breakup.

Will win: Ben Stiller- Breakup
Should Win: Ben Stiller- Breakup
Disclose: Marc Mylod – Succession

Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series

The yellow jackets have no idea of the tragedy that awaits them in the pilot

Nominees:

  • Thomas Schnauz – You better call Saul – Episode: “Planning and Execution(Season 6, Episode 7)
    • Description: Mid-season finale. Jimmy and Kim reveal the outcome of their scheme against Howard.
  • Chris Mundy- ozark – Episode: “A hard road to walk(Season 4, Episode 14)
    • Description: Last episode of the series. Marty, Wendy and Ruth find a way out.
  • Dan Erickson – Breakup – Episode: “The We We Are(Season 1, Episode 9)
    • Description: Last episode of the season. Things are getting crazy, and we can’t wait for season two!
  • Hwang Dong Hyuk- squid game – Episode: “One lucky day(Season 1, Episode 8)
    • Description: Last episode of the season. The games end.
  • Jesse Armstrong – Succession – Episode: “All the bells say(Season 3, Episode 9)
    • Description: Last episode of the season. The Roy family’s mutinies and betrayals reach a new level.
  • Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson- yellow jackets – Episode: “Pilot(Season 1, Episode 1)
    • Synopsis: The survivors of a plane crash are reunited twenty-five years later under mysterious circumstances.
  • Jonathan Lisco, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson – yellow jackets – Episode: “F sharp(Season 1, Episode 2)
    • Description: Survivors adapt to their surroundings as new secrets are revealed in the present.

Analysis: This category in seven includes five season finales as well as the first two episodes of yellow jackets. Although drivers have been nominated often in the past, they don’t win so often anymore, with The Handmaid’s Tale, Countryand Mad Men the only series to do so in the past fifteen years, all coupled with a win for Best Drama Series (making a win for yellow jackets a stretch). You better call Saul joins the five shows nominated for directing here, and Schnauz is back for his fourth nomination in this race, third for this show, the other being for breaking Bad. Mundy has a previous nomination for ozark while Armstrong is two for two so far for Succession.

Adam Scott in the terrific season finale of Breakup “The We We Are”

Shows with multiple bids routinely won this award, but that hasn’t happened since the last season of breaking Bad in 2014. The nominated installments of You better call Saul and Breakup are hard to match in terms of quality and superb writing, however squid game and Succession will surely give them their money’s worth. The easy bet is probably Successionbut this race is competitive.

Will win: Jesse Armstrong – Succession
Should Win: Dan Erickson – Breakup
Disclose: Hwang Dong Hyuk- squid game
