Aziz Ansari will direct and star in a comedy-drama with Bill Murray

Aziz Ansari will make his directorial debut in an untitled comedy-drama for Searchlight Pictures. The actor will team up with fellow comedian Bill Murray as a co-star, according to a person involved with the project.

The film will be based on Atul Gawande’s nonfiction book “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End.”

The synopsis of the book chronicles “end-of-life care, palliative care, and also contains Gawande’s personal thoughts and stories. He suggests medical care should focus on wellness rather than survival. The book’s message teaches the audience to focus on a good life instead of getting a good death.

“Aziz Ansari is an incredible talent, and with this script he brings a singular combination of insightful humor and pathos,” Searchlight presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield said in a statement. “We are thrilled to partner with him on his long overdue debut feature, and of course to work with the genius Bill Murray again.”

Ansari is also the creator and executive producer of his own Emmy Award-winning Netflix show, master of nothingwhich ended its third season in March 2021.

Murray recently starred in another comedy-drama On the rocks alongside Rashida Jones in 2020.

The film is slated for release in 2023 and is in early development with Searchlight.
