Devil in Ohio coming soon to Netflix. The streaming service has released photos and announced the premiere date for the new drama starring Emily Deschanel (Bones). The series, based on the novel by Daria Polatin, follows a psychiatrist (Deschanel) who harbors a young girl who escapes a cult and ends up endangering her own family.
Netflix revealed more about the upcoming series in a press release.
“Every teenager just wants to fit in: whether it’s embracing the latest fashion trends, memorizing the lyrics to the hottest new singles, or calmly navigating those nerve-wracking teenage ordeals that keep you busy. inevitably follow in high school.And then there are the not-so-average teenagers, like Mae (Madeleine Arthur), who, well, flees a cult in the upcoming Devil in Ohio limited series.
When psychiatrist Suzanne Mathis (Emily Deschanel) takes in a fragile girl named Mae, all she thinks about is protecting the escapee from the cult. With three girls already at home, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get Mae to fit in perfectly. But just as quickly as she settles into her new way of life, a series of mishaps – seemingly sparked by Mae’s presence – leaves the family in chaos, and Suzanne’s daughter, Jules (Xaria Dotson), begins to suspect that there is more to the mysterious girl’s past. As they struggle to unravel Mae’s story and the sinister events in the town she escaped from, the Mathis family must fight for their survival against a devil-worshipping cult.
Based on the best-selling book of the same name by Daria Polatin, Devil in Ohio is inspired by a true story. Polatin, who also serves as showrunner, told Tudum she was excited to adapt her novel for the screen. “The book was inspired by real events from a story that our executive producer, Rachel Miller, heard that actually took place in Ohio,” she says. “In the series, we look at Suzanne and her backstory. Why does Suzanne bring Mae home? Why is she so drawn to her? And why does she go to such lengths to help her ?

In order to keep the suspense alive, Polatin even created his own fictional cult for the show. “Me and my room of writers have studied all the sects. We tried to learn as much as possible about as many organizations as possible and then created our own cult using elements from many different groups,” she shares. “We developed our whole ideology – and we even wrote part of the Book of Covenants, the cult Bible [in the show].” Sam Jaeger, Alisha Newton, Naomi Tan, Gerardo Celasco, Bradley Stryker, Stacey Farber, Tahmoh Penikett, Keenan Tracey and more also join Polatin’s thriller.
