Original cast of The Full Monty returns for Disney+ series

Global streaming service Disney+ is rebooting classic British comedy film The Full Monty as a limited TV series with the original cast.

The British original series will premiere on Disney+ globally, Star+ in Latin America and Disney-owned streamer Hulu in the US.

The limited series will follow the original characters as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and the crumbling healthcare, education and employment sectors.

Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, Lesley Sharp, Hugo Speer, Paul Barber, Steve Huison, Will Snape and Tom Wilkinson will all reprise their original roles 25 years after the release of the original film, which focused on a group of laid-off steelworkers who turn to stripping to make ends meet.

The series will also feature a new cast of children and grandchildren of the returning characters.

The comedy-drama series (8 × 60′) also reunites the original film’s screenwriter, Oscar winner Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) and producer Uberto Pasolini (Nowhere Special), co-commissioned by Disney+ and the cable network American FX, owned by Disney.

Beaufoy, the show’s creator and writer, said: “We are thrilled to bring all the Monty Men together again – now with a chaotic entourage of children, grandchildren, pets and matching coat hangers – to see what life in Sheffield is like 25 years later.

Lee Mason, Director of Scripted Content for EMEA at Disney, added: “Twenty-five years ago, Simon introduced us to a group of funny, fearless and resilient unemployed working-class men from Sheffield and the world is fell in love with them. We’re thrilled to reunite the original cast of this all-new series on Disney+ to catch up on these iconic characters and what they’ve been up to since we last saw them on stage in all their glory, and we can’t wait to present a host of exciting new faces and characters.

Production started today in Sheffield and Manchester. Executive producers are Beaufoy, Mason and Pasolini, and the show is directed by Andrew Chaplin (Alma’s Not Normal) and Catherine Morshead (No Offence), co-written by Alice Nutter and has Simon Lewis as series producer.

The show was developed by Searchlight Television and FX and is produced by Little Island Productions.
