Downton Abbey’s Joanne Froggatt to star in new BBC drama series Sherwood alongside former co-star

If there’s one thing Brits love, it’s turning on the TV to watch a drama series. From Killing Eve to His Dark Materials, the BBC is often where we turn for our dramatic fix.

A series soon on the way to the BBC could be just the show that drama fans have been hoping for. Sherwood is BBC One’s brand new true crime drama series.

Partly inspired by true events in a Nottinghamshire mining village in the heart of Sherwood, the series will follow two unexpected murders that spark a manhunt. A range of well-known actors will star in the show, including Bridgerton’s Lorraine Ashbourne, The Crown’s Lesley Manville and The Walking Dead’s David Morrisey.

On screens Wednesday, June 13, the show will feature two familiar faces for Downton Abbey fans. Filmed largely at Highclere Castle in Hampshire, Downton Abbey spanned six series and two movies.

The latest, Downton Abbey: A New Era, hit cinema screens earlier this year to strong reviews. The historical drama follows the Crawley family as they navigate an ever-changing world and also largely focuses on their staff.

This included the family maids. Joanne Froggatt played Anna, Lady Mary Crawley’s maid, from the start of the program in 2010 until 2015.

The North Yorkshire-born actress received multiple Emmy nominations for her portrayal and received a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress on Television for the role. Since the end of the Downton series, she has also starred in a number of television shows.

What many people don’t know is that Froggatt actually voiced Wendy in Bob the Builder from 2015 to 2018. She also recently starred in the ITV thriller Angela Black.

In the new BBC drama, she will play a character called Sarah. She can be seen in the show’s trailer wearing a wedding dress.

She will also be joined on the show by former Downton star Kevin Doyle. Doyle, who played footman Joseph Molesley in Downton, will play the character of Fred Rowley in the new series.
