The series finales of Peaky Blinders, The Split and Killing Eve combined with Glastonbury, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the Eurovision Song Contest helped BBC iPlayer deliver record numbers.
Between April and June, programs were streamed more than 1.6 billion times, making it iPlayer’s best second quarter ever. It was also iPlayer’s best first six months of the year with programs streamed 140 million times more than the same time last year.
“”I am delighted with the performance of BBC iPlayer in the second quarter of 2022, with the BBC’s unique and distinctive range of programs creating compelling choices for all,” said Dan McGolpin, Director of BBC iPlayer and Channels.
Live events performed well, with Glastonbury also becoming the best-performing box set in the period with 36 million streams through the end of June and 39.4 million to date – and reaching a total of 20.6 million people both on the TV broadcast and on iPlayer.
The BBC has boosted adoption of its box sets, which also include The Split (35.5 million) and Silent Witness (20.7 million).
The series finale also helped boost viewing – the final episode of Peaky Blinders was the best episode of the quarter, airing 4 million times, and there were strong performances from the final series of The Split and Killing Eve.
New dramas such as Sherwood, whose first episode has been streamed 2.8 million times, and new comedy Here We Go, whose first episode has seen 2.2 million streams, have proven that there is more of bankable content on the way.
