Drama in court as lawyer dumps client over huge allegations

The There was drama at Osun State Magistrate’s Court, Osogbo yesterday when a lawyer, Taiwo Awokunle, withdrew his appearance for his client, Kazeem Oseni, following huge allegations against the police.

The accused, Oseni, was charged with different charges of theft, fraud and threat to life.

When the first indictment containing two counts of land racketeering and theft of N1,071,000 was read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty and his lawyer urged the court to grant him bail. He was released on N1 million bail with bail of a similar sum. In the second indictment containing three counts of conspiracy, robbery and threat to life, the court also granted the defendant bail in the amount of N500,000 along with bail in a similar amount.

However, a drama unfolded when the prosecutor, Fagbayinbo Abiodun, released the third indictment containing two counts of fraud of N400,000 and theft of money belonging to an Adegbite Omowumi.

The defendant’s lawyer, Awokunle, exclaimed and court observers, including police and lawyers, burst into laughter. Awokunle announced the withdrawal of his appearance from the case, saying, “My Lord, I cannot continue to defend the defendant. I hereby withdraw my appearance.

The magistrate, Adebayo Ajala, thus ordered that the accused be remanded to the Ilesa Correctional Center and adjourned the case to October 11, 2022.
