Drama on the coast as the one-act festival starts in Hunstanton on Friday

There will be drama on the coast in Hunstanton this weekend when the Hunstanton One Act Theater Festival kicks off on Friday.

The city is once again hosting its amateur theater competition which had been suspended since the pandemic and the curtain temporarily closed.

Festival director Stephen Hayter returns for his third year at the helm and a few changes to the composition of the festival committee ensure that the show continues and never becomes stale.

He said: “All of our competing bands from 2019 and before had a terrible time during lockdown.

“Unable to play games, they struggled to find revenue to fund things such as competition. We have been doubly blessed this year.

“The HDFA (Hunstanton and District Festival of Arts) gave us our full grant of £1,500 and Brian Hallard of the Princess Theater has waived all fees for using the venue.

“This not only means that we can offer free entry to theater groups, but we can also offer free advertising in our program to those who have supported us in the past.

“Everyone needs a helping hand right now and we’re just taking Mr Hallard’s breathtaking generosity and passing it on.

“The result of this has been one of the most exciting lineups of productions the city has ever seen. Not only does the roster of entrants include some of the best bands in the region, but the number of original scripts performed is unparalleled.

“Names include the Boston Playgoers, ManNic Productions, Wisbech Players and Sutton Bridge Players, as well as accomplished youth groups from Ratzcool and Hunstanton regulars, Smithdon High School.”

HDFA Treasurer Anna Hayter said: “We’ve decided that our audience also deserves some extra help this year and so we’ve also set aside some money to subsidize ticket prices.

“A single afternoon or evening session costs just £7.50 and the Sunday evening awards ceremony is £2.50 and a subscription for all five sessions is just £20. Where else could you see such quality amateur entertainment for less?”

The Hunstanton One-Act Drama Festival opens at 7.30pm on Friday with all performances taking place at the Princess Theatre.
