The BBC has come under fire with numerous attacks on the television company, where Savile spent years of his career before his death in 2011.

Responding to criticism of the BBC’s decision to produce the drama, BBC Drama chief Piers Wenger said in October 2021: “I mean it’s been a decade since Jimmy Savile died, it will be a decade the year next since his behaviors first came into the public eye.

“But, you know, our primary intention with drama is to give victims a voice – to tell their stories with sensitivity and with the utmost respect. And we have an amazing, award-winning team that is renowned for their factual drama.

“And I think there are still a lot of important questions that need to be answered about Savile, and a lot of questions that we’re asking ourselves through this drama. So I think it’s extremely important that the BBC, you know , tells this story.”

The cast of Reckoning

The full cast of BBC drama series The Reckoning has yet to be announced.

But we do know that Alan Partridge actor Steve Coogan is set to play Jimmy Savile himself.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Coogan said: “The script is very well written. And that’s something to talk about because to understand how Predators work you have to look at the whole picture.

“Like any type of character that is repulsive, you have to understand that. You have to look at the whole picture. You can’t just caricature them, because if he was a caricature, he wouldn’t have gotten away with it, because he had a certain charisma.

“So you have to look at that and understand that, and then it’s less likely to happen in the future.”
