The BBC is set to air a brand new drama series ‘The Reckoning’ which will delve into the sickening life and crimes of infamous pedophile Jimmy Savile from Leeds.
Steve Coogan has been cast as the disgraced TV personality in the new drama which will tell the story of the presenter’s life and the abuse scandal that emerged after his death.
After Savile’s death, it was revealed that he had sexually abused children on several occasions. A review later revealed that there were 72 victims of Savile in relation to her work at the BBC alone, eight of whom were raped.

The series, which comes from Neil McKay and executive producer Jeff Pope, who developed the hard-hitting true crime dramas The Moorside and Appropriate Adult, will tackle Savile’s life, his rise to fame and numerous sexual offences.
The producers worked with those affected by Savile’s crimes to tell the story with “sensitivity and respect”.
Executive producer Jeff Pope said: “The purpose of this drama is to explore how Savile’s delinquency has gone unchecked for so long, and bringing that to light, to ensure that such crimes do not happen. never reproduced again. Steve Coogan has a unique ability to inhabit complex characters and will approach this role with the utmost care and integrity.”
Coogan himself said: “Playing Jimmy Savile was not a decision I took lightly. Neil McKay wrote a clever screenplay that sensitively tackles a horrific story that – heartbreaking as it is – needs to be told. .”
So what can we expect from BBC’s The Reckoning and when is it airing? Here’s everything you need to know.
Reckoning release date
The Reckoning is due to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year, but the exact date has yet to be released.
What we do know though, is that production on the series began in October 2021 and filming took place in the North West of England and North Wales.
Le Mans Crescent in Bolton is believed to have served as the backdrop for some filming as well as the former Magistrates’ Court building behind the Town Hall.
The BBC has come under fire with numerous attacks on the television company, where Savile spent years of his career before his death in 2011.
Responding to criticism of the BBC’s decision to produce the drama, BBC Drama chief Piers Wenger said in October 2021: “I mean it’s been a decade since Jimmy Savile died, it will be a decade the year next since his behaviors first came into the public eye.
“But, you know, our primary intention with drama is to give victims a voice – to tell their stories with sensitivity and with the utmost respect. And we have an amazing, award-winning team that is renowned for their factual drama.
“And I think there are still a lot of important questions that need to be answered about Savile, and a lot of questions that we’re asking ourselves through this drama. So I think it’s extremely important that the BBC, you know , tells this story.”
The cast of Reckoning
The full cast of BBC drama series The Reckoning has yet to be announced.
But we do know that Alan Partridge actor Steve Coogan is set to play Jimmy Savile himself.
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Coogan said: “The script is very well written. And that’s something to talk about because to understand how Predators work you have to look at the whole picture.
“Like any type of character that is repulsive, you have to understand that. You have to look at the whole picture. You can’t just caricature them, because if he was a caricature, he wouldn’t have gotten away with it, because he had a certain charisma.
“So you have to look at that and understand that, and then it’s less likely to happen in the future.”
