Over the past month, Holding has captivated viewers with its “whodunnit” murder mystery storyline – and tonight viewers praised the tale’s “brilliant twist”.

In the series, Game of Thrones star Conleth Hill plays Sergeant PJ Collins, a kind man who loves comfort food and half-hearted police work.

However, his life is turned upside down when he is tasked with investigating the murder of long-lost local legend Tommy Burke, forcing him to connect with the community he usually tries to avoid.

In the latest episode of Holding, PJ learns that it was Abigail Ross (Helen Behan) – Evelyn Ross’ older sister, who killed Tommy.

The day before he married Bríd Riordan (Siobhan McSweeney) in 2001, a drunk Tommy had brought Evelyn back to his family farm, where he beat her in the same barn in which her father had committed suicide.

Evelyn miscarried their baby while he watched, and the couple were found by Abigail.

After putting a very distressed Evelyn to bed, Abigail turned back to Tommy and he tried to assault her, so she pushed him onto the spikes of the thresher, impaling him through the head.

Although she claimed she moved her body on her own, it is strongly implied that her younger sister Florence (Amy Conroy) helped move the body, unbeknownst to Evelyn.

After PJ confronted her with knowledge, Abigail confessed – but when she realized he also suspected Florence of helping move the body, she drove herself and PJ over a cliff and into the sea.

We then saw that PJ had survived, but Abigail – who was already suffering from cancer – did not.

In the end, Florence has left town and it is suggested that PJ will not reveal his suspicions about his involvement in Tommy’s murder.

Fans of the show were thrilled by this twist in the story, as everyone was convinced that Abigail’s sister, Evelyn, had killed Tommy.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote, “Didn’t see that coming! Well done Graham Norton. That was amazing! #holding.”

While another tweeted: “Feck sake didn’t see this coming… #Holding”

This one said, “Such a great ending! Awesome touch! I really thought it was the younger #holding sister”

Meanwhile, Holding featured a stellar cast including Irish legend Brenda Fricker who played the famous bird lady in Macaulay Culkin’s 1992 film Home Alone 2.

As mentioned, this four-part drama is an adaptation of Graham’s bestselling novel, Holding, released in 2016.
