Man detained for killing his wife as crash drama falters | Chennai News

CHENNAI: Police arrested a 23-year-old rickshaw driver on Friday night and charged him with the murder of his 19-year-old wife. He had beaten her to death on suspicion of her loyalty, but tried to pass it off as a fall, police said.
The accused, whom police identified as Pugazh Kodi alias Delli, had admitted Saritha to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) on April 18, telling doctors that she slipped at home and suffered injuries. She died the next morning. On April 20, after an autopsy, doctors suspected foul play and alerted police who, after two days of questioning, arrested Delli on Friday. He was sent to prison on Saturday.
Police said Delli, a resident of Kannagi Nagar, fell in love with Saritha a year ago. After a brief relationship, the two, despite opposition from their families, eloped and married.
All along, an investigator said, Delli suspected Saritha of infidelity after he found her talking to another man on her cell phone while he was away. Saritha denied the allegations, but Delli played her the conversation he had secretly recorded on his phone and after changing his settings, the officer said, based on Delli’s confession.
On April 18, Delli allegedly found Saritha talking on the phone and beat her with his hands and a stick before falling asleep. Later he woke up and tried to wake her up but failed. He rushed her to a nearby hospital and then transferred her to RGGGH, where he cited a fall at home as the cause of her injuries.
After Saritha’s death, doctors notified Kannagi Nagar police, suspecting foul play. When arrested and questioned, Delli initially denied the charges but later confessed to beating her to death, police said.
