manhunt was ordered as a series by Apple TV +. The next drama series will take viewers back to the 1860s with the assassination of Lincoln and the President’s War Secretary (Tobias Menzies) obsession with hunting his assassin, John Wilkes Booth. An additional cast and premiere date will be announced in the future.

Apple TV + revealed details about the new series in a press release.

“Apple TV + has announced a serial order for manhunt, a limited series created by Emmy, Golden Globe, PGA and WGA nominated writer / producer Monica Beletsky (Fargo, leftovers, Friday night lights), who is also a showrunner and executive producer.

manhunt is a true detective series based on the astonishing events of the Lincoln assassination, the aftermath and the bestseller by James Swanson. The limited series is set to feature 2021 Emmy Award winner Tobias Menzies (The Crown, Game of Thrones, Outlander) as Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of War and friend of Lincoln, who was almost driven mad by the need to catch John Wilkes Booth and carry on Lincoln’s legacy. Carl Franklin, Emmy Award nominee (Devil in a blue robe, Mindhunter) will serve as director and executive producer.

Half historical fiction, half conspiratorial thriller, manhunt will take the public into the aftermath of the first US Presidential assassination and the struggle to preserve and protect the ideals that were the basis of Lincoln’s reconstruction plans – issues that carry through to the present day. The series stars black historical figures whose lives were interwoven with the escape, the manhunt, and the subsequent serious crime investigation, including Mary Simms, a former slave to the doctor who treated Booth’s injuries and gave him refuge after his crime.
