Peaky Blinders boss returns to BBC for new drama series

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has confirmed his next project for the BBC.

The show boss ended his hit crime drama earlier this month after six series, although he will reunite with the broadcaster on a new show two tone (which is a working title).

Also set in Birmingham, as well as Coventry, the series focuses on the two-tone, ska scene of the 1970s and early 1980s, following an extended family and four young people drawn to the musical genre.

“It’s a project that’s literally very close to home and I’m developing characters and themes that are set in the early 80s but hopefully very contemporary,” Knight said (via Radio Times). “Of course the soundtrack will be sensational.”

Ben Irving, BBC Drama’s acting director, added: “Steven took his knowledge of that time and place and used it to weave together brilliantly original drama full of character, set to ska and two-tone music. We are delighted to be able to bring this unique piece to BBC viewers.”

“Steven’s passion for this project is palpable, so I couldn’t be more excited to do it for BBC One,” said executive producer Karen Wilson. “Set in the West Midlands, at a time of true cultural and historical progression, it will be gripping, diverse and have a rocking soundtrack to boot.”

Of course, Knight isn’t completely done with the world of Peaky Blinderswith the writer working on a spin-off film to wrap up Tommy Shelby’s story.

He also has other projects coming soon to the BBC, including a six-part adaptation by Charles Dickens. great expectations and SAS: Rogue Heroesa drama about the creation of the special forces unit during World War II.

Peaky Blinders is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Series 6 will arrive on Netflix on June 10.
