The plot of Our Kind of People Season 1

The show’s first episode, titled “Reparations,” centers on Angela, the daughter of a maid who may have delivered her out of wedlock. The father is determined to be a powerful man who could reside on the Oak Bluffs part of the island.

She moves to the area in order to find out who he is. Angela’s next step to success is to join the Gracities, a women’s social organization of which Leah is the caretaker.

Teddy, the father of both women, becomes a source of contention for Angela, which should come as no surprise. Her mother, Olivia, can only laugh as Leah embarrasses her at a Gracities after-party.

Leah, on the other hand, isn’t as cold as she looks. Angela only jumped out afterwards, calling her a “slave of wealth” in retaliation for her actions.

Lauren, his daughter, is also involved in the battle. Teddy yells at Leah as she expresses her displeasure with her father’s unethical business practices.

He addresses issues of racism and power in his rationalizing speech, assuring her that despite being black, it’s an honor to finally own the American dream. He also feels entitled to keep her quiet because he is the family’s main caregiver and provider.
