Netflix and Finnish public broadcaster YLE have announced that they will co-produce dancing brothers, a young adult dance drama and Endemol Shine Finland’s first scripted commission. The announcement was first reported by Variety.
Plot details of the ten-part show, written by Reeta Ruotsalainen (the TV series polar Circle), remain undisclosed, but it has been confirmed that the story will follow two brothers in the 1920s who found a dance company. Taito Kawata is attached to lead the project. Filming should take place this spring in Helsinki.
The new drama series was announced by Lars Blomgren, head of scripts for Banijay, during a keynote speech at this year’s Gothenburg TV Drama Vision. He said “contemporary dance will be an important part of the drama” and promised it would be “a real local show” with strong potential “to attract a wider audience outside of Finland”. “It’s an ambitious show and an original story that really thinks outside the box, so finding the right partners was key and Max Malka was able to do so thanks to his excellent track record, ”he added.
dancing brothers is created and produced by Max Malka, head of script for Endemol Shine Finland, with co-production from Netflix and YLE. Unne Sormünen will also serve as executive producer. The release date has not yet been revealed.
