The Hate U Give: Why KJ Apa’s Black Lives Matter drama should be essential viewing

The hate you give

This film should be a must-watch for all teenagers (and is already being considered in some Kiwi high schools).

The hate you give was adapted from Angie Thomas’ young adult novel of the same name, which is narrated by a 16-year-old black youth named Starr Carter. Starr lives in a poor neighborhood, but goes to school in an affluent, predominantly white suburb. When she finds herself at the center of a police shootout, Starr struggles in uncomfortable conversations with her white friends, struggles with privilege, and learns to use her voice when it comes to fighting for justice.

If 2000s nostalgia is what you want, this will take you there.

The workplace sitcom is set at Sacred Heart Hospital, where a group of aspiring doctors constantly find themselves in ridiculous situations. You have your dreamy main character JD (Zach Braff), his goofy best friend Turk (Donald Faison) and the bright spark Elliot (Sarah Chalke), plus an assortment of familiar faces in supporting roles.

As with many relics of the past, a number of characters and gags haven’t aged well. Use these moments of hindsight as an opportunity to reflect on how far TV has come over the past two decades.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is now available to stream on Disney+

Philadelphia is always sunny

This sitcom centers on “the gang” – a group of four alcoholic friends and a father (played by Danny DeVito) who run a bar in Philadelphia called Paddy’s Pub. They all have narcissistic personality traits, they constantly get into trouble with all sorts of colorful personas, and — best of all — always manage to get along (mostly).

Fun fact: this FX series has been running for 15 seasons! It is literally a record. What a phenomenal feat. That in itself seems like a great reason to watch.

The Cascabel Rattlesnake is one of the deadliest snakes in the world.

The deadliest snakes in the world

I admit I don’t know much about this show, but doesn’t the title sound appealing? Like, my heart rate is going up just thinking about it.

Seriously, if you want to know more about how snakes live their days, sneaking around – preying on other animals and such – then this is the show for you.

It’s like true-crime-meets-David Attenborough, or maybe a science lesson for people over 18. Whichever way you look at it, this National Geographic series seems quite interesting, and like a nice break from the relentless cycle of pandemic news.

High School Musical 2

It is undoubtedly the best of the three films. He has the best songs (Gotta go my way and Fabulous snap again) and best-case scenario (Sharpay trying to win over Troy with his money, honey!).

HSM2 picks up where the first film left off. It’s summer, but these middle-class kids need to find a job if they’re to have any hope of funding their college education. Sharpay gives everyone a job at his country club in an effort to spend more time with Troy, but, as usual, things don’t go as planned.
