Trinamool calls PM’s I-Day speech ‘yet another drama’

KOLKATA: Claiming the Centre’s ‘Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao’ program was a big hoax, leaders of the Trinamool Congresswoman’s (TMC) wing on Tuesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking a dig during his speech of Independence Day, delivered from Red Fort on August 15.

TMC leaders dubbed the prime minister’s call for the nation to respect women as a mere statement and “yet another drama” played out by the former. Chandrima Bhattacharya, President of Trinamool Mahila Congress, said: “It is very unfortunate that during the rallies ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections in the state, the way he (Narendra Modi) referred to Mamata Banerjee , the country’s only female chief minister, who had won the Assembly election with an overwhelming majority. He had called her ‘didi o didi’. This shows the little respect he has for women Shashi Panja, the state minister for women and child development and social welfare, said the Center’s ‘Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao’ project is a big hoax. so much respect for women, so why is the Women Reservation Bill pending in Parliament? It didn’t pass even though the BJP has a majority in the lower house,” she said.

Sushmita Dev, MP for TMC Rajya Sabha, said it was the prime minister who called other top women leaders in the country the widows of the party. He had referred to an MP’s partner as a Rs 50 crore girlfriend. “This is how the Prime Minister referred to women. This is not what is expected of the highest office in the country. He should have apologized to the nation for his past comments about women It’s just a hollow statement without any seriousness, ”
